Participation |

It should be intuitive to you that classroom participation is the key to the success of a course. Please help me make this course better by giving me your input in class and also outside of classroom. I would really appreciate it if you could all actively participate in classroom activities and discussions. |

Presentation |

There will be various in-class presentations throughout the semester. Notice that the content and the presentation style are equally valued. You should plan your presentation so that it won’t run overtime. |

Homework will be assigned accordingly. You should turn in the assignments typed. As we will discuss homework in class, NO late assignments will be accepted. |

Critiques |
30% |
You are required to attend at least 10 GIL talks throughout the semester. You may choose whichever talks you are interested in. Notice that even for topics/subfields that you are not particularly interested in, you can still learn a lot from the speakers, e.g., the presentation style, the overall organization, etc. For each of the talks you attended, you are required to submit a one-page, typed, single-spaced critique. The critique should include the following:
(1) Summary: the summary should be no more than 300 words. You should NOT copy directly from the abstract/handout/Powerpoint provided by the speakers, but should instead try to digest as much as you can and come up with a summary on your own.
(2) Critique: regarding the presentation of the talk, you should find at least three points that you find worth learning from the speaker and three that you would like to avoid for your own presentation. Please be clear and succinct in your description.
All critiques should be handed in the following Monday after the talk. Please put the critiques in my mailbox by 5:00 pm. Otherwise, they will be regarded as late. 10% of the grades will be deducted for each late day. |
